In one hour of riding, your knees flex and extend nearly 5,000 times. A misalignment of just a few millimeters, repeated thousands of times, turns into real wear and tear. Saddle height spot on but still hurting? A weak core destabilises your entire pedal stroke. When your core fatigues, your legs sway laterally, subjecting your knees to harmful shear forces – and injury follows.

Three keys to proper core engagement:

  • Brace your core, keep your back flat, drop your shoulders, and bend your elbows slightly (as if hugging a ball) – never support your weight rigidly through your arms.

  • Pedal in full circles, not just mashing down – engage glutes on the upstroke, quads on the forward phase, and ankles at the bottom.

  • Maintain a cadence of 80–90 rpm and avoid “grinding” (below 60 rpm drastically increases knee load).


3. Wrists: Don’t Let Your Upper Body Crush Them

Numbness and wrist pain often stem from a saddle too high, a stem too long, or excessive wrist extension – compressing the ulnar and median nerves.

Four wrist‑saving habits:

  • Keep wrists in a 10°–20° natural extension – not straight, not over‑bent.

  • Slightly bend your elbows to act as shock absorbers.

  • Relax your shoulders – no shrugging.

  • Rotate hand positions frequently (tops, drops, and flats), and wear padded gloves.

If pain appears early in the ride, adjust saddle or stem; if it comes after several hours, it’s usually just stiffness – more frequent hand repositioning will help.


4. Neck: Avoid the “Turtle‑Neck” Riding Style

Stiff neck and sore shoulders are typically caused by a stem that’s too low or a frame that’s too large, forcing you to crane your head upward for visibility.

Three neck‑relief tactics:

  • Set your stem height no lower than your saddle – for commuting, a more upright posture drastically reduces neck strain.

  • Switch to a shorter or positive‑angle stem to reduce forward lean.

  • Stop every 40–60 minutes to gently turn your head side‑to‑side; stand up on climbs to naturally change your position.
