Slick tires have no tread pattern at all. That sounds dangerous, but on smooth, dry pavement, more rubber contact = more grip. The continuous rubber surface maximizes the contact patch, giving you lower rolling resistance and better cornering traction.
When to avoid: Wet roads (slicks can hydroplane), gravel, dirt, or any loose surface.

Match tread to your most common terrain — Don’t buy extreme tires for conditions you ride once a year.
Lower pressure = more grip — On loose terrain, drop pressure (within tubeless or tube limits) to increase contact patch.
